Average use of annual paid leave – four out of ten workers take 50-75% of paid leave

Whether workers can take a day-off easily is an element in considering companies’ employee-friendliness and an important point workers expect in companies. Regarding annual paid leave (hereinafter, “annual leave,”) companies are required to ensure that workers entitled to ten or more days of annual leave take at least five days of the annual leave, according to laws and regulations related to work-style reform

The Labour Ministry has recently released the results of the fiscal 2022 survey on support measures for workers to take balance between work and raising children, conducted as part of the research to understand the situation of workers’ work-family balance (hereinafter, “the Survey.”) This article looks at the result with a focus on the average usage rate of annual leave.

The Survey was conducted on companies with 50 or more employees between December 2022 and January 2023. Asked about regular employees’ average usage rate of annual leave, the largest 41.3% said “50% or higher and less than 75%,” while 33.3% said “25% or higher and less than 50%.” Companies that answered “75% or higher” made up 16.8%.

Analysis of the result by the number of employees showed, companies with more employees were likelier to answer “50% or higher and less than 75%” or “75% or higher.”

As serious labor shortage continues, many companies are struggling to make their workers take paid holidays. However, raising the usage rate of annual leave is a crucial point in recruiting or employee retention.
